Rooftop Yoga
On Sunday morning, I woke up to this amazing sunrise.
It certainly made waking up before 7am on a Sunday worth it…..and even though I’ve been complaining about how long it stays dark in the morning, these sunrises might make me change my mind. I stared out the window for a full 5 minutes making “positive intentions” for the week and just feeling lucky to be alive (sounds so zen of me….but it just felt good to have a moment to clear my head)
After vegging on the couch for an hour or so, I made coffee and a green smoothie (um, needed some fruits and veggies after Saturday’s food), took Charlie for a short walk, and then met friends at Lombardi Sports for their free Sunday ROOFTOP YOGA!
As you would guess, the class is held weekly on the roof of a local sports shop. My friends had been before and I was sooo glad I was able to join them this week. It was a beautiful (though a little windy) day. The teacher donates her time (i think) and there was a big crowd– I’d guess around 30 people!
We lunged and savasana-ed for an hour
It felt absolutely amazing. During my first downward dog, I was saying, “Ahhhhhhhhh” in my head….it felt so good and I needed to stretch and move my body like that so badly. I missed my weekly yoga class last week and my body was having yoga withdrawl.
The best part about doing yoga outside? On all the “upside down” type poses, we were looking up at the beautiful sky. I took this photo during a donward dog
The sky and clouds happened to be particularly amazing yesterday, but something about being outdoors and breathing in fresh air adds so much to yoga. I realized that even though I’ve been doing yoga for almost ten years now (since college!), this was my first time practicing outside! Now I’m going to make a point to check out all the other outside yoga classes (though I think it wouldn’t be quite as enjoyable if it was a lot colder outside…).
After yoga, we did what typical girls do…..we went out for brunch/lunch, sat outside, and talked about boys, life, and all good things! Such a good day.
Questions of today……
– Have you ever done yoga outside?
– How often do you practice yoga?
– Sunrises and sunsets beautiful near you lately?
– Are there many “free” workout classes near you? (most of the sports shops– or lululemons, etc- have free classes weekly. I don’t normally go….but should take advantage of them more often)
– What workout are you looking forward to this week?

October 22, 2012 at 6:46 pm (240 days ago)I’ve only done yoga once but I’d really lie to try again, especially a hot yoga class. Have you done those? I can only imagine how cool it would have been to do yoga on the rooftop in the open air.

October 22, 2012 at 8:05 pm (240 days ago)I’ve never done hot yoga and am a little intimidated by the thought of working out in such heat…but I need to just try it- everyone seems to love it

October 22, 2012 at 6:57 pm (240 days ago)I’ve never done an outdoor yoga class, but I can imagine that it would feel a lot more amazing than it does in a studio, especially if the weather is so gorgeous. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure that the cold weather/winter is here to stay so there won’t be any chances for me to take the mat outside until next summer

October 22, 2012 at 8:06 pm (240 days ago)I know, I wish I discovered it in the summer…not late fall when the temp is dropping!

October 23, 2012 at 8:32 am (239 days ago)Love this!! I’ve never practiced yoga outdoors either, but this is inspiration to (living in the Midwest, though, this will have to wait for spring). I’ve been looking into free classes in my area and have found a few through Lululemon and a local running store. I think the best part, other than being free, is the opportunity to meet new people who like the same things you do.
Rebecca
October 23, 2012 at 12:32 pm (239 days ago)Agree– meet new people and just have a change of scene is really, really nice sometimes

October 23, 2012 at 9:45 am (239 days ago)Ok I am totally jealous of that sunrise! I have been saying for a couple of years that I was going to start going to a yoga class. I never make it for whatever reason. Always an excuse so maybe I need to just put it in my calendar as an appointment????

October 23, 2012 at 12:31 pm (239 days ago)Calendering is always helpful for me! And just not giving myself an option to say no (or else I’d prob just sit on the couch!)

October 23, 2012 at 1:44 pm (239 days ago)I’ve never done yoga outside, but I think I’m adding it to my bucket list! Nothing sounds more peaceful than staring up at the sky while meditating on some yoga poses. Yep, needs to happen.
